Bird Watching with Binoculars
I had a flood of ideas going through my mind when I read that this week's Unplugged Project theme would be birds. There are so many possibilities when you consider projects involving eggs, feathers, seeds, or birds themselves.
I concluded that I could get rid of some of the garbage I've been collecting by making binoculars out of toilet paper rolls. From there, I thought it might be neat to gather a collection of photos of some of the birds who frequent our backyard and chart how often we see them.
Little Bit has gotten better about differentiating between ducks and geese and some of the other birds we see regularly, so this seemed like a great way to get her to start really looking for differences between the various bird species.
Daddy-O obligingly went around and snapped some photos of birds that were hanging around. Within about 45 minutes he had photographed geese, Mallard and Muscovy ducks, coots, several finches, a crow, and a woodpecker.
Once they were printed, we glued them onto our chart.
As for the binoculars, Little Bit got to pick out some wrapping paper around which to wrap the TP rolls. Not surprisingly, she chose the pink with polka dots paper.
We affixed the paper to the TP rolls, then roughly followed these instructions to make the binoculars. Once they were complete, I took Little Bit outside to show her how to use her new toy.
She caught on quickly!
Each day Little Bit will put stickers beside the pictures of birds that we see while we're outside. I will continue to add photos of birds as we come across them.
Thanks, Mom Unplugged for this week's bird theme! Come on over to Unplug Your Kids to see what ideas others came up with!

First of all, you are so creative! You have great ideas. Secondly, the picture of your daughter holding the roll of wrapping paper is beautiful! It looks like you live in a beautiful area. Can Paige and I come by for a playdate? LOL
Thanks Michie! You and Paige can come over anytime...maybe Paige can teach Little Bit how to use scissors!
Love the chart -- what a great idea! :)
The chart looks great, we should do one too! Your little girl is adorable with her binoculars.

So much fun!
I used to watch ducks, swans and geese near our old house, but we have no good waterfront nearby for that here.
I am always so impressed with your crafts! Your photos are amazing too.
Your little girl is oh so adorable and the binoculars are too!
We hung a few birdfeeders outside so the kids can watch the birds, but so far the birds haven't caught on. Hopefully soon!
My P made her "own binoculars" a week or so ago, she used markers and did it entirely on her own, but they are not so pretty. ;-)
Great bird chart. We printed one off the computer..rather lazy of me
in comparison.Beautiful pics!!
What a cute idea! I might have to paticipate in some of those very cool

Okay, GORGEOUS child! Whew. And great idea. I wouldn't know an eagle from a goose (okay maybe that I would know, but no more) so your little cutie will be such a gifted child. :) Well done.
You are very creative. I love the chart idea.
It's official. I want you to school my children. Just head towards the rain and you'll find me. Their bright and energetic minds are just waiting for YOU!
wow, what an awesome project... and can she be ANY CUTER?
Okay, you are more creative than I could ever hope to be. Great project and great pictures too!
That is a WONDERFUL idea! I might try that with my children too. No ducks and geese here though, but lots of crows and woodpeckers. Your area looks really beautiful by the way!
Wow, this is a fantastic idea!
My hubby is suddenly going through a bird-life crisis wanting to feed all the birds in the WORLD, so we could totally do this.
I made a pair for my friend's little boy and he loves them...I've been thinking about things to do lately with all of the toilet paper rolls we go through...Of course we recycle them, but a reuse is always better before that...tu for the idea!
